Frequently Asked Questions

Selecting a dentist is a big decision, so it’s natural that you might have some questions for us. Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we’re asked. If you don’t see yours listed, please feel free to call us directly for help.  Dr. Barkley and Dr. Mackie are happy to assist you in finding the answers you need so you can make informed decisions about your oral health care with the utmost confidence!

How do I get emergency dental care?

Your first step in obtaining emergency dental care is to call Loretto Family Dentistry as soon as possible and let someone on our staff assist you. If you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.

Most hospital emergency rooms, mobile clinics, and urgent care centers are not equipped to care for dental emergencies, and thus if you go to one of these establishments, you’re unlikely to be treated.

In most cases, we should be able to bring you in for a same-day appointment, but please call us as soon as possible for assistance.

Dental emergencies are often an indication of larger dental issues, and an important sign that it’s time to get back into the habit of regularly visiting your dentist. Consistent visits can help prevent future emergencies, which can ultimately save you time, money, and your natural teeth!

How much does a dental check-up & cleaning cost in Corinth?

The cost of check-up and cleaning can vary depending on a variety of factors, including your location and your individual oral health.

Any check-up and cleaning should begin with a patient health history and discussion of any concerns, as well as a thorough examination by your dentist, a professional cleaning, X-rays, and an oral cancer screening.

The average cost for this type of appointment in markets across the United States is between $200 and $350. If you have dental insurance, the fees for your check-up and cleaning (including any out-of-pocket co-pays) are negotiated with us by your dental insurance provider.

How many dentists are there in Corinth?

There are over 30 dentists located in Corinth, TX.  At Loretto Family Dentistry, we have not one but two skilled and caring dentists who are honored to protect you and your family’s smiles!

Dr. Kara Barkley is a proud graduate of Texas Christian University and the University of Florida College of Dentistry. She is currently a member of the SPEAR Study Club where she regularly expands her dental education.

Dr. Kristina Mackie was educated at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) and gained early acceptance into the Dental Early Admission Program affiliated with the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). She holds certifications in both clear aligner orthodontics and snoring/sleep apnea treatment, and is an active member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and the AAFE (American Academy of Facial Esthetics).

What level of education is required to be a dentist?

Here in the United States, all dentists must earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Sciences (DDS) from one of the nation’s 67 accredited dental schools.

Acceptance into dental school requires the student to first earn a bachelor's degree (and typically very high grades) in a major that is heavy in both math and science.

Dental school is an additional three years, with a combination of classroom and hands-on learning.

Following the initial three years, some dentists choose to continue their education by earning one of 12 specializations recognized by the American Dental Association. These require an additional three or more years of dental school training.

Following dental school, all dentists are required to complete a certain number of continuing education hours to maintain their dental license.
